The Winner
The Madison County Health Department, and project artist Joseph M. Murphy, are proud to announce that Catherine Bennett of Canastota is the winner of the 2009 Vision for a Healthy Madison County art contest. The winner was chosen based on her illustration from the selected statement of the Vision for a Healthy Madison County that characterizes Madison County as “a community that values and protects its agricultural traditions, rich history, and natural scenic beauty.”
The Exhibit
Catherine Bennett's winning illustration was on exhibit August 17th-28th, 2009 in the main lobby of the Madison County Office Building in Wampsville. A special unveiling presentation was held on Wednesday, August 19th, 2009 at 12:45pm with an artist meet and greet that followed.
The winning artwork will be on permanent display at the Health Department and will be available for display at other locations upon request through the Health Department.
Additional Information
Using the selection from the vision statement below, the Health Department implemented a project initiated in conjunction with Joseph M. Murphy, a local artist and illustrator, inviting adult artists to interpret through illustration the vision of healthy Madison County as:
"a community that values and protects its agricultural traditions, rich history, and natural scenic beauty.”
Artwork* was judged by Faculty Member Roger DeMuth from the Illustration Department at Syracuse University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts.
The winning artwork has been printed on postcards distributed throughout Madison County. The name and contact information of the winning artist is denoted on all posters and materials with the artwork.
The winning artist will retain ownership of the original work and share unlimited reproduction rights with the Madison County Public Health Department of Health. There will be no financial compensation from this project. The winning artist will have the ability to sell the work at their own discretion to the public through outside transactions separate from the involvement of the Health Department.
*Due to the number of entries received, only one winner was selected.
About the Project
The Madison County Health Department and its community partners held group meetings throughout the County where residents commented on what they envisioned as a healthy and positive Madison County as part of the Community Health Assessment and MAPP Project. From this, the community's vision for a healthy Madison County was developed.
This project is made possible with funds from the DECentralization Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts, administered by the Stanley Center for the Arts. The Madison County Health Department is the award recipient for this project, initiated by local Canastota artist, Joseph M. Murphy.
